I have a love-hate relationship with bedtime. Sometimes bedtime is filled with lots of love and cuddles, but then there are those days where it is a complete disaster and everyone is melting down. Those are usually the days when I have rushed through the bedtime routine, and not taken time to help my kids unwind.
One of my favourite parts of our bedtime routine (when it goes well) is story time. So I am going to share some of our favourite stories with you! I hope you find some new books to add to your collection, and create many wonderful memories with your kids.
Best Bedtime Stories for Kids
Sandra Boynton is the greatest! Seriously, if you haven’t read her books, you need to click here and buy one right now! They are short and sweet, and cute and funny all rolled into one. I’ve been reading them to my kids since they were babies, and my six year old still likes them.
‘The Book With No Pictures‘ is great if you don’t mind getting a little silly and making some weird noises. My kids laugh their heads off every time, and it’s one they ask for over and over again. I will admit, it’s not exactly the most sleep-inducing book… but your kids will love it! So maybe start off with this one and get all their sillies out early, then move onto the more relaxing stories.
‘I Like Myself‘, by Karen Beaumont is a great book that encourages children to love themselves just the way they were made. This is a cute book, with a great message that builds your kids self esteem.
‘
I’ll Love you Forever‘ by Robert Munsch is my favourite kids book of all time. Just thinking about it makes me get teary eyed. It’s always a great one to read when you’ve had one of those days where you just want to pull your hair out, and your kids are driving you batty. It will remind you of just how quickly this stage goes by, and before you know it your kid will be rocking you to sleep and singing “I’ll love you forever…”
One day I was looking online for a kids bible and I stumbled upon some reviews for this book. All the reviews for this book were amazing, but I thought, well it’s just another kids bible story… I’ve heard them all before, how could this one be any different?
Well! Let me tell you! If you know Jesus (and even if you don’t) you NEED this book! I hadn’t even gotten to the end of the first story of Adam and Eve and I was bawling!
Like ugly cry sobbing… in a good way!
My kids were looking at me like I was absolutely nuts, but I couldn’t control it.
The way that Sally Lloyd-Jones writes about the love of the Father for His children is an absolute gift. Each and every story in this book ties into the love that Jesus has for us, and points to the cross in a way that speaks to the heart of His children. I highly recommend this book if you want to teach your kids how much they are loved by their Father in heaven.
Mrs. McNosh and the Great Big Squash
This book is another silly one that my kids love. We actually own two copies of it, so it must be good! I love the silly rhymes and the cute story line… whenever my kids let me pick a story, this is always a top choice! 🙂
‘Guess How Much I Love You‘ is a sweet little book that always starts a friendly competition about how much we love eachother. What a perfect way to end the day and drift off to sleep thinking about how loved we are.
This book makes me yawn every time I read it… which makes it the perfect bedtime story ;). It teaches the alphabet while using alliteration to describe how all the animals go to sleep. This is always a great one when my kids have just a little too much energy and need to calm down before bed.
I hope you found some great books that you and your child will enjoy over and over again. What are some of your favourite children’s books either from your childhood, or that your kids love? Leave a comment below, I love hearing from you!

Great suggestions. Thank you. I have a 5 month old and was looking for some new reads! Have the ‘love you forever’ and Guess how much I love you. I guess I will have to try the others!
