When Miss A was born, I started making this hat for her. She had one in every colour, for every outfit. This crochet baby newsboy hat is my favourite hat to make. It is an easy pattern for beginners, and it can be customized for a girl or a boy depending on the colours you choose. For this particular hat I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Neopolitan.
Supplies:
- 4mm crochet hook (I use these, and they come in a handy case so you don’t lose your hooks!)
- 1 skein medium weight yarn (I used Loops & Threads Impeccable yarn in Neopolitan)
- 2 Buttons

0-3months:
Row 1: Ch2 into magic ring, 10 DC into Magic Ring
Row 2: Ch 2, DC into same sp as Ch2. 2DC in each st around. Sl st to join.
Row 3: Ch 2, DC into same sp as Ch2. *1 DC in next 2 stitches, 2 DC in next st* repeat from * around. Sl st to join.
Row 4: Ch 2, DC into same sp as Ch2. *DC in next 4 stitches, 2DC in next st* repeat from * around. Sl st to join.
Row 5: Ch 2, DC into same sp as Ch2. *DC in next 6 stitches, 2DC in next st* repeat from * around. Sl st to join.
Rows 6-9: Ch 2, DC into same sp as Ch2. 1DC around and sl st to join. Tie off on last row, leaving ends to sew over with border
Brim:
Row 10: Ch 1, 1SC in next 10st. DC2tog, DC in next 15st, DC2tog
Row 11: Ch1, turn. DC2tog, DC2tog, DC in next 10 st, DC2tog, DC2tog
Row 12: Ch2, turn. DC in next 13 st across brim.
Row 13: Ch1, turn. SC in next 13 st across.
Row 14: Ch2, turn. DC in next 13 st across.
Row 15: Ch1, turn. SC in next 13 st across.
Next you will fold the brim under and sl st along the inside of the hat. This step will make the brim thicker so it will hold it’s shape better. See pics below.
Once the brim is sewn under, SC across the last 10 st to the back of the hat and sl st to join. Tie off.
Band:
Ch25 leaving enough yarn at the beginning to sew button on.
DC in 2nd st from hook.
24 DC to end.
Ch2, turn. 24 DC to end.
Tie off leaving enough yarn to sew button on.
Sew the band onto hat just above the brim. I just sewed the buttons through the hat to secure it on.
You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed making this hat. Please comment below or send me an email if you have any questions.
Are you suppose to double crochet in the chain two and the double crochet at the beginning of each round as well? Since there is not a count at the end of each row I am not sure.
Yes For the increase rows you do.
Is there a video for this?
No unfortunately I don’t have a video for this. Sorry.
Thanks for sharing this pattern, I’ve been struggling to come up with a way to do the brim of a hat I made, I hadn’t thought to fold over and double up! 🙂
I’m so glad it was helpful!
